Saurfang is a pain.

Our guild's 10man team assaulted Icecrown Citadel last night for my second run with the raid group. The group is 3 healers (Priest, Shammie, Paladin), 2 tanks, 5 DPS (3 melee, 2 ranged).

My 1st attempt at healing the 1st boss Morrogar, went off without a hitch. I think we lost 1 DPS, but downed him pretty quickly. The 2nd boss Lady Deathwhisperer was also 1shotted with 2 deaths in the raid, and we rolled the battleship event without any problems.

People got a couple of upgrades.. and then we hit the final boss of the 1st wing, Saurfang. BAM! We had a good hour left on our schedule, and feeling confident after our success with the 1st three...

Wow.. we had 5 or 6 attempts - each with a wipe. But we learned a lot about the encounter. Definitely need to fine tune our strategy a bit, and makes sure nobody gives him any runic power, because that debuff of him is a killer.

But my Priest's gear is doing very well. Only have a couple of ilvl 200 pieces left I need to get rid off. I have 2 Triumph emblem pieces to get and then 2 Frost emblem pieces, and 2 craftable pieces (that is going to cost a boatload of gold due to the orbs needed). I just hope to win some upgrades that will preclude spending crazy amount of gold. :D

  1. Couple hints with this fight:

    A) Amplify Magic: All damage in this fight is physical. This will aid your healers a great deal by increasing the effectiveness of your heals.

    B) Range DPS: We struggle with 3 range DPS, we get him down easily with 4.

    C) Usually the druid will root the beast on the left when it pops and the hunter will use all sorts of crazy slowing. These two burn that beast ASAP and then go back to DPSing the boss.

On the other side, the pally tank stuns the other beast when it pops, then the other two burn that beast ASAP and then go back to DPSing the boss.

    D) We've done it easily with both 2 tanks, 2 melee, 4 range and 2 healers or 2 tanks, 3 healers, 1 melee and 4 range. We've gotten through it once with only 3 range, but it was a much more difficult fight.

I think that's all I've got. Hopefully it helps.

  2. Good ideas thank you.

I think we need to have more focus on the CC aspect of controlling the beasts.

  3. If you're short on ranged, you can get melee to help kill adds as well. My guild will usually get the melee to chain stun one add and they'll kill it before it has a chance to hit anyone.

  4. We found that switching one healer to DPS got us our first Saurfang-10 kill (after doing the first three bosses with three healers).

The damage really isn't intimidating until the marks start marking - and with 20% more DPS (plus more practice at avoiding all the things that give him blood power!) you shouldn't see many.

Is your priest disc or holy? Spamming shields for sure helps with his blood power gain. Not just on the dot, but when blood beasts are about to spawn, shield the ranged dps that are going to be involved with killing them.

  5. Holy Priest... I try to get shields up on all the DPS & Heals when the count-down to beast-time starts.

Our Shammie healer switched to DPS for 1 of the fights. I'll see how it goes next time.
